It’s a crazy business. Labels make much of their money now on so-called “360” deals, where they take a cut of an artist’s total revenue, including ticket sales, merchandise sales, etc. But generally, they’re more like a VC than what labels used to be: they make many bets, expecting their real returns to come from few.
