This winter I have left an experimental worm bin in an unheated shed. I wrapped it in a plastic tote, put some bedding in between the worm bin and the plastic tote, and heavily covered the inside of the worm bin with cardboard and paper. I mostly fed that bin with unfinished compost and food scraps.

It turns out for now that after night temperatures around 30F and some nights around 15F, I have a lot more worms than when I started the bin. I am not worried at all about the quality of the compost but more to see how those worms can handle that.

I would not recommend to anyone to try this at home. If worms get to be frozen they will die.

What are your experiences with letting worms outside in the winter?
