It's worth noting the importance of P.I. in early aviation and well... 500 years of shipping! PI helped build the first world currency (the Spanish Real) via the Acapulco Trade Route w/ Spain. The clipper paths were heavily influenced by that knowledge (experience, tradewinds, etc)
San Francisco was ~ where the tradewinds from Asia ended so it made sense to keep using that route for planes for awhile I guess
And it will be again, 4 efficient ocean shipping purposes at least
