It's hard to believe how much land was cleared way back in the day, and I can't imagine the backbreaking work that went into clearing the land of trees and rocks.

Somewhere on line once I ran across aerial surveys using special techniques (LiDAR maybe?) to map all those walls. I found this, don't remember if it's exactly what I was looking at years ago, but it's at least similar.
