I'm assuming it shrunk because of the lockdowns. I have a theory. I think, incrementally, the middle class was wiped out by policies so they moved out of the suburbs with the big back yard and back into the urban cities. Once there, they were more likely to vote for these regionalist policies which make it even harder for the middle class to survive in the suburbs by redistributing the wealth through taxation. In Vancouver, for example, if your house is more expensive than an arbitrary amount (ie. 4M), your property taxes become punitive (ie. 60K/year). What you end up with is an urban population living off the government handouts and always voting for more. This is basically what Klaus Schwab means when he says "you will own nothing and be happy"
