At his old job my husband had this thing called “the parting shots.” When the newsroom got really crazy after a long night the head editor had this way of making a remark as he left that would sound like a compliment— only after he was gone would the “shot” hit and everyone would groan. Examples:
“Whenever things were at their worst tonight… you were there.”
“I don’t think any of us will ever forget your work tonight.”
“Tremendous effort!”
