Many years ago, the late U.S. Senator Bob Krueger, a Democrat from Texas, wrote an opinion column in a San Antonio newspaper that argued we are all responsible for rejecting racist jokes when we hear them. In an interview late in his life, the late Representative Maury Maverick Jr. of Texas recalled hiding in a bathroom stall with his feet pulled up so that he could not be seen, instead of casting an unpopular vote in the Texas legislature. When his father later asked him why his vote was not recorded and he admitted what he had done, his father said to him, “well, you’re nothing but a goddamn shithouse liberal.” Don’t be that guy.
