There's a mediation called Metta Bhavana where you practice extending your care for others into wider and more distant circles, until eventually you encompass the entire planet.

Then I think about so many of the people I've worked with in my career, who seem to strive for exactly the opposite. They literally treat everyone outside their chosen circle as fodder for the ones they do care about.

So they see themselves as Saints of a sort , or righteous, or whatever.
