One of the things that's lost after my generation is listening to music albums as a whole. We listened to records (and later CDs) as distinct, planned sequences of music. Because that's how the artists constructed them, and intended they be heard.
Much as an entire classical symphony wouldn't be listened to as separate movements, pop/rock albums were originally meant to be heard as a single work/statement.
