Bob Gruen is a self-taught #photographer who spent much of his career as a freelancer hustling shots to Rock Scene and Creem magazines for as little as $5 each. He took some of rock’s most iconic images. Perhaps most famous is that of John Lennon, arms folded, standing in front of the skyline in his “New York City” T-shirt. This shot has become something of a rock ’n’ roll Mona Lisa, seen on t-shirts around the world.
