By default windows are placed such that if you open a bunch of windows of the same size they will be centered together in the end (e.g. if 3 windows fit on the screen it'll place the first such that the 3 windows will be centered). I have no idea why, but that's the status quo.
There is a gsetting to center new windows by default, but it's also not ideal in some cases (the primary one beinf opening mutiple windows of the same size).
