The two party system in particular paired with "compromise politics" resulted in that most of the time people were picking between a Republican and a Republican being called "Democrat." Even some of the more left leaning members of the left are still pretty far right in the end.

Combine this with issues like the Electoral College and an adamant refusal to properly deal with misinformation and, well, here we are.
