#EngenderedWriting 06 — Have you ever been accused of writing a gender unfriendly story? (E.g., anti-feminist, anti-man, etc.) How did you react? How would you react reading one? [Tarred as Gender Unfriendly?]
It's hard when the editors at first like one of your novels and then decide to reject it. This happened before the burnout. In the final analysis, the editors thought I'd emasculated the male MC in the cast. The story was all about gender and gender roles, magnified metaphorically by how the aliens reproduce, on the planet that humans were seeking refuge. Specifically, how our science interferes with power of their elites. It didn't matter that he was under the most psychological stress and peer pressure, and that he undergoes the greatest character building in the story. His choices are colored by his desire to save the people on the starship as much as it is his frustration with the women in his life (how they don't conform to gender roles). I think maybe I too realistic in the way I depicted him, which made those making the decision uncomfortable. Since I'm planning a rewrite, I'll see after years in the drawer what if anything needs changing. #RSStoryMotherhoodRebellion
