Sure, but it's still not sustainable. The biggest issue is that there are too many projects that don't work together. Looking at OS's alone, pretty much everything works within windows, and possible Mac (a bit more hit or miss that windows, but not by much). Linux struggles to even continue support for software and hardware from 6 years ago, let alone maintaining or implementing more advanced features that most commercial OS's have along side legacy support.
