Sometimes it’s necessary. I had a case once with a ColdCard where it could not sign my transaction until I upgraded.
But in general, my opinion is not to upgrade firmware. I treat them like time capsules. By the time it’s time to upgrade firmware, it’s time to rotate the device out of the quorum, IMO.
