Are you proud of your MC? ... I'm finding this question strange...
I think your analysis of the meaning of this question, to me, feels spot on. Children or others we can influence to be better have to act on what they learn. Their ability to be themselves is totally independent of us, thus them getting their own result can be something to be proud of them for.
Our MCs are an extension of ourself, not independent. They do think or do for themselves. It feels off to have pride in what we wrote them to do. Yes, we can be proud of ourself, but that's different.
