I would never, ever start my own software business aside from the word of mouth, friends and family freelancing shit I do sometimes. software customers are the worst, they don't understand the amount of work involved and never have enough money budgeted

but in some other kind of engineering, sure I could see hanging out my shingle. if someone is coming to a mechanical or structural engineer they're probably serious and ready to spend money, not trying to get 200 hours of work for $500
