also, i find it amusing, having spent so much time in the balkans when i hear from someone that "in balkan the mafia is the government" and honestly, comparing the level of corruption and sophistication of their corruption it's like that saying, i'd rather an honest robber who just says he's robbing me than someone who says they are helping me but reaching around and emptying my pockets
a notable phenomenon was the one where if you start a business in these eastern european countries, and it becomes successful and makes lots of money, you get told that you are selling it or they are pushing you out of the market with dirty tricks
so, yeah, being a successful business person in balkans is not possible unless you pay the monopoly tax to the oligarchs
but it's actually no different in the West, it just has this shiny glaze of legitimacy and expensive propaganda to convince people that the democracy is working and there is a just society, when it's actually more deeply corrupt
i just can't forget this because at least every week or two i am suffering symptoms of being poisoned by the food i buy at the shop and the level of corruption that is required to push poison on people and randomly murder people via this cowardly, but very effective method, all depends on this corruption
it was why i eventually didn't want to live in bulgaria any more... in 2013 it was great, the banks were great, the internet was the best and cheapest, and by 2022 after having had an account with unicredit, with an employment contract in hand and residence permit they wouldn't reopen my account
this is all the result of the EU turning bulgaria's mafia government into an advanced, high tech, propaganda extortion operation
prices have gone up on everything, the service quality of everything has gone down, the only thing that redeemed the place by 2021 was that they weren't enforcing vax and lockdowns because of the passive resistance of the people, who have lived under obvious tyranny all their lives, for generations, going back over 500 years, they cannot be manipulated this way, and that's great but they keep wearing them down and it's very disappointing
in any case, i sure as fuck want to get out of portugal because of this poison food being sold and everyone is just sullen and thinks they can't do anything about it... well, they sorta do, but it's really weak, if they suffered as much as i do from it they'd be kicking the EU off this island, and there is a major contingent of people on madeira who want the EU and portugal out of here
