Just as you don't navigate the high seas without a list of known, safe servers…without a navigational chart, you don't throw yourself through the Reality Barrier without at least an idea of where to go. In this case, that place is known as Home.
The Engineer has the exact magic number of Home (yeah, right), and the travel will not be a straight line. He knows where he must turn left, where and when to go up, down, where to do a U turn, etc. He knows the things he need to pick-up on the way Home, and where to hire the right people (?) to do the job. Now he only needs to do it.
Where did he got that info? Only the Universe knows…
