"people seem to misinterpret complexity as sophistication" is something I absolutely observe on a regular basis, especially in my students and junior engineers. And "If you can’t do the first variant, the second way starts looking awfully attractive perhaps." applies even to code reviews on e.g., pull requests: a 12 line patch is brutally dissected and discussed, while a 1200 line monster merge gets a quick "lgtm".
