This weekend I learned about the life of Joseph Priestley, the chemist, philosopher, and co-founder of unitarianism who also inspired Bentham to develop utilitarianism.
Priestley, who developed the phrase the “greatest happiness of the greatest number,” faced persecution in the UK. When his home & lab were burned, he moved to the United States and spent his last days in Northumberland Pennsylvania, which I rode my bicycle through this weekend on my way to see family.
