A 68-year-old pediatrician has been sentenced to five and a half years in a penal colony in Siberia. Before her, a nurse had been sentenced to eight years in prison. The crime: both made comments against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In Russia, the mere mention of the word “war” to refer to the Russian “Special Military Operation” in Ukraine constitutes a federal crime. According to human rights organizations, since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Putin has arrested thousands of Russian citizens for “publicly discrediting the Russian armed forces.”
