On days when I feel discouraged about our society's collective support for the helpers of our world, I think about the long road to having emergency medical services —  and the reluctance to support those services in the US.

Here in Tompkins County, there is a debate over whether to ask whether to designate ambulances an essential service, supported by universal standards and shared funding.

A long road indeed.
