They were not designed to be in a public lab. At the end of every term they were full of extra copies of all sorts of programs and rife with viruses. The IBM PCs were easier to protect, but running Windows they were excruciatingly slow. The student would click something and nothing would happen, so they clicked something else and by then the first thing happened. Ah, the early days.
