It's the wedge that the far-right / christo-fascists (with TERFs being used as the useful idiots) are using as part of a long game to roll back bodily autonomy for cis women and equal marriage rights for LGB people.
Trans people are a very small proportion of the population and therefore are an easy target for these groups.

The two visits to the UK by Bannon in 2019 (to Johnson) pre and post General Election, were when the Tory party dropped their manifesto pledges of self-id for trans people and banning of conversion therapy for all LGBTQIA+ folks.
Labour have done exactly the same and have effectively stopped all NHS trans affirming healthcare in the UK.
It is very important that all cis people stand shoulder to shoulder with trans people regarding this as it is not just about trans people.
