Lately, I’ve been reading essays from The Great American series, namely Food Writing and Travel Writing. It’s nice to see what gets honored. But I’m absolutely blown away by how long most of the pieces are. I get about a third of the way in and think, “Ok. I’ve got it,” and then it just keeps going on and on and on. Strange. It doesn’t seem like they need to be that long. Do we really need 8k words on dried beans?
