A large majority of the world's population can criticise their rulers without fear of punishment. Technology improves our lives in countless ways. In 23 years, the number of countries that recognise legal same-sex marriage has gone from zero to 34. Infant mortality globally has never been lower...
I could go on and on. There has been so much progress, far more steps forward than steps back, even if the road is uneven and twisty.
But the planet is on fire. Conflicts and oppression deriving from climate change will only get more common. Rights will be rolled back as a result. Millions will die. Everything is so fucked.
I don't know how anyone could live *without* having both light and darkness in their minds simultaneously.
