I’d imagine it runs gamut from, “I need a book about ____. Go.” all the way to just being a quasi-editor, reworking unpublishable fragments and outlines into a coherent, polished whole (I’ve heard people describe being offered ghostwriting services of the latter sort for doomed book contracts). But what’s more typical?
