In R it "just happens" which yes, sometimes leads to bugs, but is also very convenient.
In Julia, though, I think I feel better about it because I presume it's handled at the function level with an explicit function for each combination of signature.
One solution might be to enable emitting some sort of message/warning/error when those promotion functions are invoked.
