I can think of two ways that kind of skew can crop up.

Secondly, when the battery in the CMOS starts to go, the clock skews like crazy. You can drift whole days just before it dies. The clock will tend to have its own tiny cell battery, which tends to last ten years - that's the battery that could be on its way out.
