I've got a background in archaeology, and can tell you that the science there traditionally suffers from two weaknesses: it's limited to what endures in the record, which is just a slim rind of the whole culture, and it has historically cut sharply in the direction of male activities, to the exclusion of 50% of the data, minimum.
Both flaws default to big game hunting. But we've know for generations that most food was produced by women, and was largely plant matter and small game (rabbits, squirrels, birds, panfish, shellfish, etc. Typical women/children game.)
The whole paleo thing was a typical old-school macho fantasy. Red meat was not the dominant part of any culture's diet, with rare exceptions. (Arctic, sometimes grasslands, for the most part.)
