Societies that hold property need rules regarding how property is inherited. So I'd say it's as old as (at least) meaningful trade in valuables, if not as old as agriculture.
None of that stuff is what concerns me tho. I see a godform that has taken hold. It absolutely boggles my mind that no Hindu sect has ever called it out.
