OK. I did:
sudo nix-channel --add https://channels.nixos.org/nixos-24.05 nixos

followed by :

sudo nixos-rebuild switch --upgrade

removed a package "etcher" by commenting it out in the configuration.nix that generated and error

and now the machine is VERY busy... will see what happens to the Firefox version.....
