They can for sure collect a lot of information, but associating it with a single identity may prove hard if you are anonymity savvy.

You can use Tor, in which case the browsing habits of multiple users are all coming from the same node. In fact it's probably best to run your own Tor node, because then all your user identifiable information is going to get mixed up with that of a bunch of other people's. Also, you could create a bunch of Tor nodes and randomly switch between them all the time. Finally, you could hack your browser (or develop a new browser) that reports random font profiles, randomly introduces delay and noise into mouseover and key events on web pages, etc, in order to fuzz any server side tracking of such events via Javascript callbacks.

This way Google (and other service providers) ends up with a load of garbage that they can't usefully tie to any one individual let alone know who that individual is or how to identify them for any particular connection.
