Currently reading Turtles All the Way Down, and i'm being reminded of other commentary I have read on how broken the institution of science currently is due to funding issues and incentive mismatches. Could we apply something like the value for value model to science? Could talented people submit research proposals and get them crowdfunded, doing their research in the open for global peer review? I could imagine an app/platform built on Nostr and Bitcoin/Lightning that does this, but does something like this already exist? Are there examples of scientists using existing platforms like Patreon to fund open science research?
