As I was prepping the train, I had time to take photos of this.
The design of our trains mean that you can walk almost all of the way along the train without having to go through any doors. The exception is at the final third of the carriage at each end, which is 1st class on some services and separated by a swing door.
In the event of a serious fault (for example, a flooded toilet) in once section of the train, we have these sliding doors at the inner ends of the third coach from each end, so we can shut-off three coaches at the end of the train.
The primary use for these doors is in the event of a fire onboard. Closing these doors will dim the lights in the shut-off section of the train and then activate smoke extraction in the shut-off section of the train.
Bizarrely, these don’t work in the same way if you were to close both sets of doors to shut-off the middle two coaches of the train… I’m sure this feature could have been implemented because the train would know that both sets of doors were closed, just as it knows when one set of doors is closed 🤷🏻♂️
