We see in sports how flawed referees are. Will AI take over human referees in the future? If that does happen, some would argue that without human error that the games played would have less disgruntled fans and overall more fair outcomes as well. Using an NFL playoff game from last week as a case in point: Houston Texans fans wouldn’t be making excuses about how the NFL always favors the Kansas City Chiefs.

On the flip side of that is then wondering who is going to be in charge of the algorithms to dictate what is considered a penalty? Is there a way to prevent
favorable bias in this scenario? I always feel like sports serves as a great analogy when we think through the centralized vs decentralized argument. This all comes back to the trust factor. In a perfect world, none of us have to worry about trust from the get go. Throughout history there always has seemed to be some sort of “referee” one way or another. Even back in the bartering days way before central banking existed there were select tribe members that had to keep checks and balances through markings of some kind.

#Bitcoin appealed to me early on because of the notion of being able to trust math before worrying about having to put faith in a person. Numbers are very binary, they don’t cheat or lie or have emotions. With that being said, cooperation is what makes the world go round and us humans working in sync is why we have remained at the top of the food chain for so long.

So where do we go from here when it comes to anything from sports to social media to how we transact and store money without having constant trust issues? Time will tell as it always does. One thing is for certain, technologies cant be shelved forever, and change is inevitable.
