I’m a massage therapist so I work intimately with people. My favorite part is the talk therapy side to it so I thought maybe I’d enjoy just doing that. But then I looked into the costs of schooling and saw how the curriculum has been warping more and more over time and I felt wrong about going back for a degree despite many people telling me I’d be really good at being a talk therapist.
One of my clients who’s a therapist said she wished she just did “life coaching” instead. She felt like the schooling was unnecessary or unhelpful and wasted a lot of time and money. She and many others explained that education doesn’t make a good therapist.
I tend to believe that getting a massage is more low-key and less stressful than going to therapy. So when people come see me, they don’t anticipate having a psychological or philosophical conversation. It almost functions as an inhibitor so I can connect with them more deeply and they relax more. Maybe I’m doing things unconventionally?
Anywho, I appreciate you sharing your experience. It was just the sign I needed to help me trust myself more.
