“You have to stop being afraid sometime!” says the cheerful drugstore cashier after asking me why I’m wearing a mask. I get so few actual out-loud pushbacks I wasn’t ready with, for instance, “I’ve been looking both ways before I cross the street my whole life, and I’m not giving that up either!” It’s not cowardice to take reasonable precautions.
