Apropos the current AI hype: About 20 years ago, just before I left the ruins of what was once AT&T Bell Labs for academia, they brought in a new VP of research from some (non-research) business unit elsewhere in the company. He set up meetings with the senior research staff to find what they did.
His questions for me all involved "AI", like "What AI are you working on?" I said I don't do AI research. He said I should.
It turned out he thought AI was the term for any advanced technology.
