I agree with your assessment, but as an American, it seems like a pretty common (not "normal") situation.
Post-war consensus is pretty clear that unless you want to be cancelled immediately, you mustn't say anything remotely critical of Israel.
But here's my take on it: Absolutely no urgency about solving this Israel-Palestine problem. 100% certain it'll still be here 50 years from now.
