Actually yes, although it needs to have Torah in it.
America is just weird in this regard. Most americans have lost their original ethnicities and cultures and instead now carry the american culture. Consider american blacks, for one. They often claim to be african, but most can't even tell which part of Africa their ancestors were from. Meanwhile, Africa is a diverse continent with hundreds of different ethnicities and tongues, just as Europe is.
Most people like this just do it while looking for the sense of meaning and belonging, as far as I understand it. It's always more pleasant to associate yourself with Garibaldi than with a burger.
