I did some vacuuming this morning. I always gently wake up my cats before vacuuming because I loathe being startled awake, so I figure it isn't fun for them, either. Some of my cats run like they're being chased by a Balrog as the vacuum roars; some peek around corners at the loud machine. All of my cats ignore the vacuum cleaner when it's not in use.

This morning, I stopped vacuuming so that I could rest for a bit. I left the vacuum in the room I was cleaning, rather than putting it away.

Bad move.

Oh, the feline drama about the vacuum cleaner not being where it usually is when not in use. The panicked skittering up to the silent noise machine, the sniff and swat, and then fearful, low to the floor running away from it. The puffed tails of panic. I spent half an hour calming my cats. Because the quiet vacuum cleaner was not in its usual spot.
