An excellent episode of the Merely Catholic podcast where @gavinashenden interviews one of the authors of the book causing so much controversy in Catholic social media circles, “Is the Synod a Pandora’s Box?” This is a must listen for everyone who loves their Catholic faith.
Unlike many who get upset with anyone who is so “arrogant” as to dare to question the Holy Father’s initiative, I have come to understand that to call into question the Synod on Synodality in no way makes one a bad Catholic. It also doesn’t mean that this questioning implicates one as being against Pope Francis, as many would want you to believe. It simply means that we are trying to clarify what is going on here and understand the implications of this approach.
One of my favorite quotes from the interview (paraphrasing) is that the Church has always RECEIVED everybody into the Church. Its doors have always been open to all people. The difference with this synodal process is the idea that we must RADICALLY INCLUDE people in the Church just as they are without asking them to convert, without insisting that they repent of their sins. Receiving vs including, two very different ideas.
The author is saying that we are being asked in this synodal process to welcome both sinners AND their sins. This approach has major implications for the Church’s moral theology, a theology established by Christ himself that has been upheld by the Magisterium for two millennium.
I strongly encourage you to listen to this episode and to read the book. As I’ve said before, if the die-hard proponents of the synodal process object to you listening to its critics, if they themselves refuse to listen to its critics, then it seems to me that they are acting hypocritically.
Here’s a link to the digital copy of the book. Read it and listen to the podcast. Then decide for yourself what you think about the Synod on Synodality and what this might mean for the Church.
