"Eye Witness," the first U.S. retrospective for Palestinian painter Samia Halaby, was meant to be a joint exhibition between Michigan State University (MSU) and Indiana University (IU). However, the latter abruptly canceled the show in January, citing "safety concerns," after Halaby posted on Instagram decrying Israel's bombing of Gaza. The Michigan show is going ahead and ARTNews' Sarah Rose Sharp says it's a triumph, writing of one painting: "The work is a monument to dedication and patience—qualities so evident in her art, that must also have served her well in her career. Like so many women artists of her generation, she has waited for decades for a show like this."
