Eriospermum paradoxum are confounding desert plants from South Africa. They have a singe leaf that grows out of the *bottom* of their potato-like tubers. They are often fuzzy and sometimes the single leaf is variegated and spiky so it looks like multiple leaves, but really it's just one leaf. Sometimes they have nothing above ground for years and no one knows why.
They have separate flower stems ... like orchids in that way. Deeply strange plants.
