This is good news.
We almost lost the Tīeke, or South Island saddleback. Introduced predatory mammals drove it extinct from NZ’s South Island and Stewart Island in just a few decades. The remaining population was on the tiny, pest mammal free Big South Cape Islands off Stewart Island. When ship rats arrived in the 1960s, an emergency response by local Wildlife Service staff saved the species.
Now they’re returning to the South Island!
