Asheville, in western North Carolina, is a music city, with welcoming crowds for every genre and new bands to discover everywhere you go. Andy Cush, a touring musician himself, writes for Hearing Things about how, when Hurricane Helene struck, musicians from across the country came together to raise funds via ‘Cardinals at the Window,’ a compilation album. “We asked friends, or friends of friends, and everyone was saying ‘yes’ really quickly," says Grayson Haver Currin, a music journalist who helped put the record together. "And when that starts happening, you just say, 'F*** it, I’ll ask this other person.' And that led to asking R.E.M. and Tyler Childers and Jason Isbell,” all of whom contributed songs.
