A channel is like an abacus, you can move balls from one side to the other. Liquidity is how many balls are in your side (outgoing) or the other side (incoming) of the abacus. The funding transaction defines how many balls the abacus has (channel liquidity) and how many balls are glued to the sides of the abacus (channel reserve)
