I filed a FOIA with the Justice Department on Aug 11, 2023. I asked for an update and this week got a genuinely nice email back, in part apologizing because my request may take about 24 months to complete — about 1091 days on average to process a "complex" request. By my math, that's Aug 2026.

By federal government standards that isn't bad at all — many FOIAs take so much longer. The work that government FOIA folks do is vital and hugely appreciated, and I wish they were given more resources.
